My wife and I just recently returned from a trip to Europe where we spent the last two and a half weeks in Greece. The last week of that was on the island of Naxos, which I highly recommend. The picture on the left is one I took at sunset this past May.

For this trip, I intended to focus on all of my senses to inspire my art. To my surprise, Greece was having a mild spring and virtually no summer so there was way more color than I anticipated so that was a big bonus. I saw flowers I have never seen before and in beautiful colors. I expected lots of cool colors, a thousand shades of blue given the water, the coastlines, and so much more.

As I thought about my days and events, I also started to consider artistic inspiration coming from the culture, stunning landscapes, and vibrant atmosphere. I’m going to try to convince you above all of the other reasons to travel to Greece, you will find artistic inspiration which can ignite your creativity.

Greece is well known for its ancient history and mythology, which can serve as a huge dose of inspiration. Exploring and taking in archaeological sites such as the Acropolis in Athens or the ruins of Delphi can transport you to another time and evoke a sense of wonder.

The Greek Islands are known for their breathtaking natural beauty. From the white-washed houses and blue-domed churches of Santorini to the turquoise waters and rugged cliffs of so many islands, the landscapes offer endless opportunities for capturing the essence of Greece in your artwork.

Greece, especially in the spring and summer, enjoys lots of sunshine, which covers the landscapes in a warm and inviting light. The interplay of light and shadow can create dramatic contrasts and help you with considering adding more depth to your compositions. The vibrant colors of the Greek architecture, sea, and on this trip, even the flora can also inspire you to experiment with different palettes and explore new color schemes.

As we all know, Greek art, literature, and philosophy have had a profound influence on Western civilization. Visiting museums like the National Archaeological Museum in Athens can expose you to masterpieces from ancient Greece, such as statues, pottery, and mosaics, which can spark your imagination.

Greece has wonderful traditions, customs, and festivals celebrated throughout the year. Participating in events like the Greek Orthodox Easter or local festivals can immerse you in the energy and sense of community through traditional music, dance, and costumes, all of which offer a unique source of inspiration.

Greece also has a thriving community of artists and craftsmen who continue to preserve and create traditional art forms. Engaging with these artisans, whether in workshops or by visiting local studios and galleries, can provide insights into their techniques, materials, and creative processes, inspiring you to explore new mediums or artistic approaches.

As I mentioned the relaxed pace of life in the Greek Islands, coupled with the peacefulness of the Mediterranean Sea, can create an environment conducive to reflection and introspection. The tranquility and sense of escapism found in Greece can help you connect with your inner thoughts and emotions, allowing for new ideas and concepts.

I know everyone's experiences are different and what made me stop, look, smell, and feel might not be for everyone, however, Greece has such depth, I am confident that any artist will find their experience there will be more than worth it. Go experience it for yourself!
